Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate effect of acupuncture treatment with gold needle on serum female hormone levels and bone mineral density in ovariectomized rats.
Decreases in serum estrogen level, bone mineral density, and uterine weight were observed in ovariectomized rats.
The acupuncture treatment with gold needle on Kwanwon(CV4) and bilateral Samumgyo(Sp6) for ovariectomized rats was found to induce the increase of serum estrogen (estrone, estradiol, and estriol) level and the decrease of follicle stimulating hormone and leuteinizing hormone levels.
In addition, acupuncture treatment with gold needle has produced the increase of bone mineral density in spine, pelvis, and femur. The changes of the body weight and uterine weight, however, were not observed after acupuncture treatment with gold needle.
Acupuncture treatment with gold needle on tail produced no effect on serum female hormone levels and bone mineral density in ovariectomized rats.
These findings suggest a possible protective effect of acupuncture treatment with gold needle on Kwanwon(CV4) and bilateral Samumgyo(Sp6) against bone loss in ovariectomized rats, associated with a significant increase of serum female hormone levels.
